X-Ray Inspection

X-Ray Inspection

What is X-ray inspection? Learn how X-ray inspection reveals hidden solder joints beneath BGAs and QFNs.

What is X-Ray Inspection?

X-ray inspection is a non-destructive testing method that uses X-rays to make hidden solder joints visible.

X-ray inspection is used where optical systems like AOI reach their limits — for hidden solder joints beneath BGA or QFN packages. X-rays penetrate through the materials and make the solder connections visible.

Process and Application

Modern X-ray systems offer 2D and 3D imaging (CT) with high resolution. This enables detection of voids, solder bridges, head-in-pillow defects or incomplete wetting.

In medical technology and other safety-critical sectors, X-ray inspection of BGAs is part of the standard test scope.
