Flying Probe Test

Flying Probe Test

What is the Flying Probe Test? Learn how it works, advantages over ICT and when it is used.

What is Flying Probe Test?

The Flying Probe Test is an electrical test method where movable test probes contact individual points on the PCB without a fixed fixture.

The Flying Probe Test uses motorized probes (typically 4-8) that move freely across the board, sequentially contacting test points. It checks shorts, opens, component values and polarity.

Process and Application

The key advantage is flexibility: no fixture means no lead time and no tooling costs. Ideal for prototypes, NPI and small to medium series. The trade-off is longer test time per board compared to ICT.
