What are fiducial marks? Why fiducial marks are essential for automated placement and how to position them correctly.
What are Fiducial Marks?
Fiducial marks are reference marks on the circuit board for the camera systems of pick-and-place machines.
Fiducial marks are circular copper marks (1–2 mm diameter) serving as optical reference points for automated placement. Global fiducials are used for overall board alignment; local fiducials near fine-pitch components enable additional precision correction.
Practical Application
A minimum of two, ideally three global fiducials per board are required — asymmetrically placed for unambiguous orientation detection.
