ESD Protection (Electrostatic Discharge)

ESD Protection

What is ESD? Why ESD protection is essential in electronics manufacturing and what measures are required.

What is ESD Protection?

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) refers to sudden electrical discharges that can damage sensitive electronic components.

ESD is one of the most common causes of component failures. Voltages as low as 100V – imperceptible to humans – can damage semiconductors. Latent damage is especially critical, as weakened components may fail during later operation.

Process and Application

Effective ESD protection includes grounded workstations, ESD clothing, wrist straps, ionized air and ESD-safe packaging. SMTEC's entire production is designated as an EPA (ESD Protected Area).
